Six Apart has sold Livejournal to Russian company SUP. After minor google work on the company (and having found at least one personal data scandal), I have turned off automatic payments until further notice. WTF. Also, read this article. I'm considering archiving my entire lj, porting it out, and deleting it. What the hell. =(I honestly think I am with him as I believe this may well be the death of LiveJournal. The current government and culture of Russia has little interest in protecting free speech and increasingly is slipping back into being a destructive, oppressive totalitarian regime at odds with the West and with aspirations to once more become a world-power. Beyond that, Russia is a country that has shown little regard towards International law or the laws in areas where they do business. LiveJournal will be owned by the Russian Oligarchy with close ties to the Kremlin. Politics aside this is just plain bad, bad, bad. It surprises me that people raised such a hooplah about the sale to Six Apart, and yet there has been no backlash on something that not only threatens LiveJournal but us all as individual members. Anyone else thinking of jumping ship?

It's not a super move, but it's not the end of the world. Wait and see.

How long will the servers be kept in the US? Which country will handle billing? (That makes me the most nervous) How will the right to free speech in both countries be handled?
And on a purely philosophical and political level I and much of rest of the world have an increasingly negative view towards Russia - for very good reason: It is rapidly slipping back into totalitarianism.
What would that mean for LiveJournal?

That, and I've got a permanent account - I really can't leave, and I'd be terribly sad to see other people go because I couldn't join them. I'd have to use LJ for another 3 years to make the permanent account worth it.
Regardless, they don't have any of my important information on file. I'm just not worried. What on EARTH could they do to me? Aside from deleting my journal with no way for me to retrieve it, and even that isn't the end of the world.
